SHERWOOD, Ark. -- Pre-K students at Oakbrooke Elementary spent the month of February learning about Black History Month, friendship and bravery.
“We talked about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he helped make it possible for people who looked different to be friends,” said teacher ms. Kenya Browning. “I introduced Ruby Bridges and discussed her courage.”
Ms. Browning and her students talked about physical differences and asked them to draw a picture about their friends that were different from them.
The class also read, “The Colors of Us,” and completed an activity in which they were given a mirror and asked to describe their facial characteristics, then create a self portrait and describe what they liked best about themselves.
“We talked about our differences and how it made them special and unique,” said Ms. Browning.
